I have been looking for screen locking and screen on apps/widgets in order to use a different button or screen icon other than the power button to put my bolt to sleep and lock it and to wake it back up. I have found a few that look promising ('lock screen app', 'no lock', and 'widget locker') but they all say that to uninstall them you have to go to menu>location and security>select device administrators and uncheck the app, THEN the app can be uninstalled.

The problem is, on my stock unrooted bolt running android 2.2.1, there is no location and security menu option but there is a security option. I click the security option but there is no select device administrators option.

Does anybody know where the select device administrators option is on the bolt?

Go to settings then to security. It is right there.

But it's not there. Here are the options I have when I open the security options:

Set up screen lock
set up SIM card lock
visible passwords
set password
use secure credentials (greyed out because it is unchecked)
Install from SD card
Clear all credentials (greyed out because it is unchecked)

That's all I see. Junianby, is it possible that you have an app installed that requires 'select device administrators'? The developer of 'Lock Screen App' emailed me back and said that an HTC Desire user had the same issue but once he installed the 'Lock Screen App' and let it be a device administrator, THEN he could see that option under security. I wonder if this may be the case for you too.

Mines under location&security>device administration/select device admin's but I'm rooted on CM7

Are you just afraid to try until you can find it or you have an answer? I have Elixir and Seek Droid in there. I'd uninstall them and let you know, but it's too much trouble because I have a lot going on with Elixir. Stop being a wuss and try it. :p;)

I don't believe the option is available unless you've installed an application like you described. I use the Screen Off and Lock application as well as WidgetLocker. When I go to Menu, Settings, Security, it's right there about middle of the screen. Screen Off and Lock has the admin access.

I long press the search button to turn the screen off and use the volume buttons to wake the screen.

There is. Go to "Lock screen and security", press "Other security settings", then proof there is "Device administrator". :))
