Motherboard? Cable? And if you do replace the screen and the tablet stops working, what then? Pay a shop to fix what you broke? Very few will.

Pay a shop to fix the tablet - it'll be cheaper.

I don't knkw what the new cost on your unit would be but my GT3 8.0 originally cost me $179.99. I too recently dropped mine and cracked the digitizer pretty badly. When I contacted a local shop about a replacement, they quoted me - you'll never guess! - the exact same price to fix it. Phooey on that noise. I have acess to my wife's iPad Air and while I don't really care for ios (although it does admittedly have a few advantages on my Tab 3 - and ios never screwed me on the sd card thing like Samsung did, they simply didn't have a slot from the get-go), I may transition to it while I try to replace the digitizer myself. I don't usually have much luck with repairs of this nature but I figure I don't have much to lose. For the time being it continues to work just fine, just a little scratchy in places, so I'm not in any hurry to take the job on. But man, does it ever look horrid!

Samsung tab 3 has different models and sizes, nobody can answer your generic question.
Tab 3 8.0, LCD and touchscreen are glued together, you have to replace the whole LCD assembly.
Tab 3 7.0 and 10.1, you only need to replace the LCD. Depending on the size, 10.1 only around $40, cheaper for smaller size, 7.0 only around $20.

Funny colors and lines sometime just come from loose LCD cable, again I don't know your model, then I have no idea.
