Where did Polaris put my file, really?

I'm using Polaris Office 5 on a Galaxy S5, and spent hours revising a document i urgently need, then went to Save As, which typically produces a new document. It appeared to be doing that, and gave me a pop-up where I could rename the file, along with displaying the file path to "downloads", the location of the original file. I could not change or edit the selected path in any way. Just touching it sent me to device storage. But when I open the indicated download folder, only the original is there. And I renamed the file two or three times with save as. There should be multiple versions SOMEwhere. But where? And why can't you choose your own file path in P5. Apparently, you could in P4. Someone please help me! Thanks (whimper)
