I have a galaxy tab A running android 8.1.0. I connected to my PC [via USB] to move some files around and I noticed that it told me that my tablet had 1.5 gigs available out of 10.6. So [from my PC] I checked the size of every file visible on the tablet and it totaled to 350 megs. What is eating up to the other 8+ gigs of memory? And is there anything I can do to minimize it? thanks!

The PC will only be able to read files in folders made available using the MTP file transfer protocol. You may have noticed that not all folders show up -- typically, system folders won't show up.

On the tablet, show us a screenshot of the Settings>Storage menu. http://forums.androidcentral.com/ge...ide-how-post-screenshots-android-central.html. It might also be helpful to use the DiskUsage app to get a better idea of what's taking up space.

Messaging and social media apps are common culprits, because they can build up enormous caches. If you use apps like Telegram, kik, Instagram, etc., check their storage in Settings>Apps, and see if clearing the cache for any of them can recover a lot of space.
