Where is a list of running apps?

I can't seem to find anywhere is the settings a list of running apps.

In the notification bar, a running app is sometimes listed. In the battery section of the settings I can see what apps have used the battery since the last full charge, but there does not appear to anywhere wear I can view what apps are actually running at any given time.

Anyone?

On my pixel XL, I can reach this list by enabling the Developer settings and it has the option near the top to view running services, perhaps this will help?

This. After Marshmallow in most phones the running apps/processes are kind of hidden under the Developer Options. To enable them you need to tap 7-10 on Build number in settings - about phone.
