The thing I don't like is I can't see a way to default to month view. Seems they are taking away options.

Are you talking about Google Calendar? Open it then open the menu then select Month. Mine opens to Month view every time.

It defaults to last view when closed. I almost always close it in month view, but if I don't, it opens in the last view I've used.
