Where to begin?

A friend of mine rooted my phone, but i toyed with some things i shouldn't have, but only because i'm curious. I don't just want to know that's something you don't mes with, i want to know it's foundation and on. I don't just want to know what keeps my rom's engine running, but how each gear serves a purpose to get the engine going, and if one part is damaged or is missing, It wont run to it's full capacity. yeah i messed up my phone:-[, but i am sure once i learn what does what i can get my phone working again.:
