Unfortunately Google has abandoned the mid range market. I was happy with my 5X until it bootlooped. I also agree with you about the camera. I took it on a trip to Italy and was pleasantly surprised at the camera's output.Essential Phone looks nice, but at $699 is in a different league than the Nexus 5x. Camera is really important to me, and I haven't seen anything better than the 5X in the lower price ranges. My son has an iPhone 7 and I think the 5X images are much better.
do I go for the Pixel?
I have absolutely no idea what to get next. I wish the 5X would have gotten 3+ GB RAM, but I'm having severe issues with RAM shortage. Average use is 95-99%.
The only Android phone I'm willing to buy has to have promised security updates for at least 3 years, and quick OS updates for at least 2 major versions. The only device I know of that fits this description is the Google Pixel, but I have a low tolerance towards OLED displays so that leaves nothing. Unless the Pixel 2 will go back to IPS LCD which is extremely unlikely.
I don't like the iPhone experience, but other than the Pixel phone it's the only one guaranteed to get software updates for 3+ years. And they use IPS LCD (X excluded).
I don't know what to get next....
