Hi,

Just got a Chromecast for a very specific use case. All my music is on Google Music, and I want to listen to it on my stereo, and control it from my phone over wifi. I do not have a TV. My stereo is old, doesn't have a HDMI socket, and i am planning to buy a new one. 2 questions here:

1- Can i do what I am planning to (control w/ android phone, and listen to Google music on a stereo through a chromecast) ?

2- Shall i buy any stereo that has a HDMI port ? Or are there restrictions on which ones will work / will not work ? Is there a list of "tested stereo systems" out there ?

Thanks for any pointers. Looked online, didn't find any good answer so far.

You should be able to connect your Chromecast to a home theater system that passes hdmi to a tv (which for you is not connected) while playing the audio. One possible problem though is setting up the Chromecast without seeing its display, although if you've done it before seeing the display is not really necessary, assuming everything is working as it should.

I just got one for this specific reason as well. I have a newer model Onkyo (bought it this summer) and it works great. Can't remember the model number but from what I've seen most receivers with a simple hdmi port works with Chromecast.

@Bloodthirsty: Thanks - could you post the model number or reference when you have a sec ? Thanks!

Setting it up is ok - I did it with a videoprojector. But don't plan to switch my video proj on everytime i want to listen to music... What I have seen else where is that "I *should* be able to..." Just want to make sure I *will* be able to, especially as I will prob buy online + shipment overseas, so cannot return easily if it doesn't work...

See my post under "connecting chromecast to AV receiver. You could use the HDMI switcher alone to provide an analog audio out to your existing stereo. Can't remember which one I used but it has four in and one output HDMI. The only thing I needed it for is the analog output though. I think it was about $35 on amazon.

I use a low end Denon AVR-1312. It's a two year old model I believe. I have had my Chromecast plugged into it since August and have never had any issues. Music can certainly be streamed without the television being on. I do this frequently.

I also have a Denon receiver, AVR-2310CI. Chromecast works fine on it.
