Hi,

I haven't picked up a NC yet, but have been reading about it. I've seen that there's a root method and an SD card method for putting froyo on it, but haven't seen if there are any obvious benefits of one vs the other? Is one method preferable to another?

A plain root gives you the market and the softkey app. So you keep the book software experience which i personally like. The SD method allows you to run stock froyo from the card and removes the nook launcher. In a nutshell...

The best thing to do i give them both a try. You wont mess up the nook and will always be able to go back to whatever you like best. Personally I dont like nookie froyo as well as I like the stock root.

so using the SD method, i can pop the card out and it boots as normal? normal being like from the store?

Yes, if you use Froyo you can pop the SD card in and out and have rooted or bog standard Nook Color.

I had some issues with using a Class 4 SD card myself but as it turns out some of my issues could have been from Haptic and touchscreen lag. I'm going to retry it with a Class 10 SD and using the current 5.9 image that turns off Haptic by default and will 'sleep' the nook first thing after a boot which apparently will help also kill touch lag.

Using AutoNooter on 1.0.1 was brain dead simple and it's just as simple to restore the device to stock by interrupting the boot process 8 times (just keep powering it off during boot) which causes it to assume there's something broken and it'll wipe and restore itself to the shipped image.

yeah, i know its simple, but the wife has forbidden me to do it since its hers and she doesnt want me to "mess" it up. so this way i can still play around with it without touching the original look to it. or atleast until i get my own!

one more question, froyo does everything that root would do? thx
