I have recently rooted my phone (Thunderbolt) and have read through cyber warrior's sticky post of how to do it. I think I got an ok Idea The pictures are priceless. Anyone out there that has tried some different ones or that are just far more advanced then I am could you offer a Rom to switch to. Obviously I want something nice but I also want something that will work properlly without all the Issue's if thats possible.

I do have another question though It looks like installing a ROm is basically like installing a new OS on a computer correct? If so does the New rom typically come with applications installed only can assume each one is different depending on who made it. But will everything work pretty much the same as getting mail/text/phone calls/market place etc. Or is it more a plain system and I have to go out and find everything.

Thanks for the help Steve

The rom will come with apps. Once you're rooted, download titanium backup and backup all your downloaded apps and data. I can't recommend a rom. Just pick one and dive right in. Titanium backup will help restore your apps once you flash a new rom and it'll restore app data too. So if you play any games then don't worry about having to start from the beginning.

It all depends on your preference. You basically have your sense based roms that come with HTC sense and AOSP roms that is basically a stripped down version of android. They all have your basic apps mail, phone, text. Go on the rooting, roms and hacks section of this forum usually the more popular roms are posted there. Gingeritis and BAMF are two popular sense rom. Liquid and CM7 are two good AOSP roms. If your just learning I would recommend sense based roms. They tend to have less problems. As for flashing roms just follow cyber warriors sticky its very well written. I was a novice when I rooted my phone and I was able to do it without a problem following that guide. Hope this helps. :)

Liquids AOSP or CM7 for AOSP ROMs. BAMF Forever for sense 3.0, BAMF SoaB for sense 3.5, SkyRaider for sense 2.1 3.0 hybrid (also very customizable) Gingeritis 3D is also a good ROM. RootzWiki Thunderbolt Developer Forum has many others too. Yes a new ROM is like a different operating system but most are similar. Make sure you backup everything first Titanium Backup is a very good program for that (games data can be backed up) Root Explorer is a good program to have after rooting as well as MyBackup Root. Some say to backup your contacts via Google I prefer to save them to v cards on the SD card. Before flashing any ROM do these things.
Boot into CWM (press down volume and power on while phone is turned off)
Select recovery
Backup your present ROM
Select wipe data/factory rest ...confirm
Select wipe cache partition ...confirm
Select mounts and storage in this area format system, cache, and data
Go back to main menu
Select advanced wipe dalvik cache.
If you have a full 100% bump charge wipe battery stats
Go back to main menu and proceed to flash
Some people do each of these things 3 times others have said once is enough. The choice is yours. HTH and very good luck to you.

Wow.. Thanks for all the info. To give some more information I do have Titanium Backup and have already backed up all Data, Apps. As well as used the Rom manager to create a backup and have Titaniun set to update each week so hopefully I have read correctly as far as all that goes. I appreciate the patience and help with me the novice as I am sure same questions are asked 50 times a day.

As far as the ROM's mentioned:
Liquids AOSP or CM7 for AOSP ROMs. BAMF Forever for sense 3.0, BAMF SoaB for sense 3.5, SkyRaider for sense 2.1 3.0 hybrid (also very customizable) Gingeritis 3D

I know these are each different desighned ROM's and I am guessing Sense is more like the standard format now on Android? This where I am getting little lost. Also Once downloaded I guess I could follow Cyber Warriors thread onto how and where to put it on SD card and install. and I guess I would do something similiar through the boot menu to get the apps etc back through Titanium app that saved to the SD?

Also is there any bumps or typical things that I should expect before attempting this? and I am guessing from Reading Cyber Warriors thread if it fails or not happy I could always go into the boot menu and use either Titanium save or ROm manager save file to go back to that save point?

Again just little more info main reason I rooted my phones is to be able to use the wireless teather programs. my G/F used the USB teather app for her comuter which worked great but decided I would like to use the full one as I am getting my Daughter an Ipod touch for chrismas and we are in car a lot so this way she could still use the net. and My G/F doesn't need to carry cable just little more convinent. Reason for looking into other Rom's is pones are seeming to be very glitchy as They reset every so often, if I dont restart the phone each day has little issue's freezez etc. Plus a lot of things on the phone that I Never use.

Again thanks for the help everyone It's greatly appreciated

Sense ROMs are like what comes stock on the Thunderbolt it is sense 2.1. Sense 3 and 3.5 take sense to a higher level. If you take a look at the Team BAMF forums under Thunderbolt ROMs you'll find about 15 different ROMs. Check the first page of each ROM and see if there is anything that strikes your fancy. I would suggest making a nandriod backup via the ClockWorkRecovery and load your ROMs from there. Some people have had problems loading from ROM Manager. I made a folder on the SD card just for ROMs then I can just go into that folder and load the ROM from there. Also for future reference Boot Manager is a program that will allow you to have up to 5 ROMs loaded at once. I have Forever as my phone ROM and have SoaB, SkyRaider, Liquid 3.2, and Retro loaded into the four slots on the SD card. But that is for when you become a flashaholic.

I can not find the "Team Bamf" forum here any where. I searched has it been removed or am I have a Blind moment where I can not see it. Thanks

Boot manager does sound like a very cool program.

Another issue I am thinking of is that once I go ahead and install a new ROM since I have titanium back-up and backed everything up. How would I go about putting all my app's back on phone through program

Also one other thing will I have to Root my phone again if I install a New ROM or does the phone stay Rooted?

Thanks for all the Help. I have downloaded the Forever Final 1.10 file. I hope this one has all the updates in it already. Now only thing I need to figure out is how to use Titanium back up to get all my app's back on after I install ROM

If you already backed up your apps flashed the new rom, the next step is open titanium backup click on backup/restore and restore each app one by one.

have not flashed the OM yet only downloading. Still reading... I know how to do it just want to make sure I understand everything or as much as possible. Just nervous about installing ROM and something not working correctly. I have read about several different issue's and each ROM has it's own things the forever rom seems to be pretty solid but still has little bug's mentioned.
