I had stock SMS and pop-up but as was said, I did like the fact that a notification would still appear after I've answered a text using pop-up. I ended up going with GO SMS a day after I posted this thread, but I felt as if it KILLED my battery so much faster than normal. Now I just downloaded Handcent and I like it a lot, way better than GO SMS so far in my opinion.
So I've been using SMS Popup and the Stock SMS app for a few days now and I really like it. Having the popup feature isn't a huge deal, but it's a nice convience.
SMS popup settings: These are the SMS Popup setting that I've changed from default and why...
Enable notifications: I turned on the SMS Popup notifications and turne off the stock app notifications. I need more than the popup. I want a sound, vibration, blinking LED, and an icon in the notification bar (incase I'm away from my phone it will stay there). I also want the notification to go away when I respond through the app. Using the SMS Popup notification takes care of this, since they get dismissed when you respond through the app. I don't like remider notification, so the notification bar icon serves as my reminder.
On a related note I turned off the received message notification in the stock app because those don't get dismissed when responding through SMS Popup.
Button Configuration: I changed button 2 from "Delete" to "Text-to-Speech". I rarely delete SMS messages. I just let the old ones auto delete. I almost disabled button 2 altogether, but I sometimes use text-to-speech while driving, so I figured I'd give it a try. I haven't actually used text-to-speech in the app yet, so I don't have any insight as to how well it's implemented, but I assume it's using the standard text-to-speech interface and that it's fine.
Quick Reply: I turned on quick reply so that I can reply through SMS Popup and not be taken into the stock app to reply.
Dim Popup Screen: I keep my phone screen pretty dim to save battery, so I turned enabled Dim Popup screen so that it will be consistent.
A couple of people have complained that SMS Popup doesn't play well with notifications. Here's my 2 cents. I agree that it doesn't play well with notification from the stock app, but those are easily turned off and replace with notification from SMS Popup. I even kept the same sound and icon as I had with the stock app (they have the standard HTC icon as an option). The vibration patter is a little different, but that can be customized also. I just haven't taken the time to play with it. The only thing that left hanging out is the number that shows up on the home screen icon for the stock app. For me personally, I don't care as I go into the stock app enough that it's pretty much always on zero. And when I need notification I tend to look at the notification bar and not the icon. On SMS Popup website they say there's an app or widget from someone else that you can download to replace your home screen messenging icon, so you have an option if it's a sticking point for you, but it's not for me.
Anyway, those are my 2 cents. Free free to comment or criticize my opinions below.
