Which SMS app do you use??

For those of you using SMS Popup with the stock messaging app, do you find that the home screen icon show the number of unread messages even after you clear it from the popup screen? I installed the SMS Popup and while it is exactly what I am looking for, it seems silly that I have to open the Messaging app to clear the count of unread messages.

Agreed. There is a setting to mark 'closed' messages as 'read' in the settings, but even with that checked, I still have to open the message app to mark something as read. If there's no way around this it's def. a deal breaker.

I just dl'd SMS Popup (with stock SMS app). I'm gonna play with it for a few days and then share my thoughts.

I had stock SMS and pop-up but as was said, I did like the fact that a notification would still appear after I've answered a text using pop-up. I ended up going with GO SMS a day after I posted this thread, but I felt as if it KILLED my battery so much faster than normal. Now I just downloaded Handcent and I like it a lot, way better than GO SMS so far in my opinion.

I tried various ones and have been on Handcent for a long time. Like it and will stay with it.

GO SMS all the way! Can really customize, love the themes, on my wife's phone can make the font really big, so she can actually read it ;-)

So I've been using SMS Popup and the Stock SMS app for a few days now and I really like it. Having the popup feature isn't a huge deal, but it's a nice convience.

SMS popup settings: These are the SMS Popup setting that I've changed from default and why...

Enable notifications: I turned on the SMS Popup notifications and turne off the stock app notifications. I need more than the popup. I want a sound, vibration, blinking LED, and an icon in the notification bar (incase I'm away from my phone it will stay there). I also want the notification to go away when I respond through the app. Using the SMS Popup notification takes care of this, since they get dismissed when you respond through the app. I don't like remider notification, so the notification bar icon serves as my reminder.
On a related note I turned off the received message notification in the stock app because those don't get dismissed when responding through SMS Popup.

Button Configuration: I changed button 2 from "Delete" to "Text-to-Speech". I rarely delete SMS messages. I just let the old ones auto delete. I almost disabled button 2 altogether, but I sometimes use text-to-speech while driving, so I figured I'd give it a try. I haven't actually used text-to-speech in the app yet, so I don't have any insight as to how well it's implemented, but I assume it's using the standard text-to-speech interface and that it's fine.

Quick Reply: I turned on quick reply so that I can reply through SMS Popup and not be taken into the stock app to reply.

Dim Popup Screen: I keep my phone screen pretty dim to save battery, so I turned enabled Dim Popup screen so that it will be consistent.

A couple of people have complained that SMS Popup doesn't play well with notifications. Here's my 2 cents. I agree that it doesn't play well with notification from the stock app, but those are easily turned off and replace with notification from SMS Popup. I even kept the same sound and icon as I had with the stock app (they have the standard HTC icon as an option). The vibration patter is a little different, but that can be customized also. I just haven't taken the time to play with it. The only thing that left hanging out is the number that shows up on the home screen icon for the stock app. For me personally, I don't care as I go into the stock app enough that it's pretty much always on zero. And when I need notification I tend to look at the notification bar and not the icon. On SMS Popup website they say there's an app or widget from someone else that you can download to replace your home screen messenging icon, so you have an option if it's a sticking point for you, but it's not for me.

Anyway, those are my 2 cents. Free free to comment or criticize my opinions below. :)

I used ChompSMS for awhile... then I changed to GOSMS and LOVE IT!!! I like were I can customize it just the way I want it... and plus I got the GOSMS Theme Maker... I love to make my own themes...

I use handscent.
I always used the stock app but I got tired of not having functionality with group messages with iPhone users. A lot of my coworkers and classmates have IPhones and tend to group message and I wouldn't be able to join efficiently. Handscent allows this so that's what I'm using! Does gosms have this function? If so, I'd give it a whirl.

I use "Verizon Messages" which I have found gives a good interface for having multiple conversations at once.

I use Chomp SMS and am very happy with it. The stock messaging app in ICS seems close, but there's a few features which I prefer in Chomp.

I used Handcent for a little while, but I didn't see what the big deal was, so I uninstalled and went back to the stock SMS app. Am I missing something? Why should I bother with a 3rd party app?

Truth is, nothing. I prefer the stock over all mods, but Handcent has the MMS group messaging feature that Android lacks. That's the only reason I use it.

I started using Handcent couple of days ago. Way better than the stock sms. Still playing with it though I will also look into Go Sms. I will keep whichever is better.
Handcent does have popup feature.

Use to use Hancent but now love GO SMS Pro.
They update every week...which can be a pro or a con depending on your PoV, personally I like that about the GO team.

I was using Handcent for a long time then tried GOSMS and found that better to my liking. The people I text the most are all customized with different icons and notification sounds and I like the little draw feature. I don't use popup so i can't comment on that part
