Who is still rocking the rooted stock ROM?

I have tried a couple of other roms and both were great. This is the first phone that I have rooted and unlocked bootloader and still prefer the stock rom. I really do like what Samsung has done. I would like to find a overclock kernel if someone knows of one. I seem to only find ones that are built into the rom already. But other than that I personally love the stock!

I'm "still" running the rooted stock ROM (albeit with a mod to add the wifi toggle in the notification panel, the ICE/JB battery color mod, WidgetLocker lock screen mod and with the Nova launcher instead of the Samsung launcher).

The stock ROM has plenty of flexibility, good performance and good battery life.

Same here...Yeah, sure I've added my own personal tweaks and such, but I honestly haven't found a reason to run anything else on it...everything just seems to work, so why mess with it?

When I got the device, the first thing I did was root it and unlock the bootloader, but I generally don't install ROMs until (a) they're close to finished and pretty much free of bugs and (b) I have a reason to switch. I've been running CM9 and CM10 on my Galaxy Tab 10.1, so I'm quite familiar with it, and would definitely consider running it on my S3, but I'll wait awhile until there is a more stable final version available. I know some aren't very fond of TouchWiz, but I don't really mind it.

I am also Rooted with an Unlocked Bootloader (have Free Mobile Hotspot) and for now I will stay Stock. My main reason is the NFL Mobile App. I had an OG EVO (with Sense) that I put many ROM's on, a Motorola Photon with MotoBlur and quite frankly TouchWiz is not all that bad. I have a WiFi Xoom with JB and will wait for a Stable JB ROM or for Verizon to update the SGSIII.

Yeah I really like touchwiz. I came from galaxy 1 and it has come along way. Samsung put a lot of thought into this one. Its nice to be able to use stock features and not have to worry about lag or whatever.

I am pretty teach savvy, but have not attempted root yet. Honestly trying to determine the benefits. I think I just tripped over 2 on this thread. You mentioned hot spot and NFL mobile. How do you get these from being rooted? Do you have to unlock the bootloader to get these?

I downloaded something that allowed a simple root, but like I said haven't tried it yet. I want to go back to unrooted if necessary to get the JB update.

Thanks for any help or to point me in the right direction.

As far as Tethering goes, I have the 6GB Share Plan which allows me to share 6GB of Data with my other Devices. Now if I go over 6GB it will be $15 per GB. With Tethering I can use as much Data as I want for Free I basically have Unlimited Data using the built in Mobile Hotspot for Tethering other devices to my SGSIII . You can get Tethering from here:

As far as NFL Mobile is concerned. From what I gather the Verizon NFL Mobile App ONLY works on Stock ROM and NOT any of the Cooked ROM's floating around. I have the Verizon NFL Mobile App ($5 a month) and it's Awesome for an NFL Fan.

No, you do not have to have an Unlocked Bootloader to Tether (just Root) or for NFL Mobile

Lots of people root because you have complete control of your phone. You can try different ROMS (modified versions of the OS), overclocking, and for most users getting rid of the junk apps that phone carriers like to put on your phone.

This link is a easy step by step on how too root a Verizon version of Samsung galaxy 3. Just follow the instructions and videos and you will be fine. Once you get it rooted you can find uninstall software ware for free on the market to help remove unwanted apps. Remember to back everything up first, but its so easy nothing should go wrong.

I am running rooted stock until a vanilla AOSP JB ROM pops up. I can't believe there isn't one out yet. I'm not a huge fan of CM, though I will flash it soon if another options don't become available.

I've rooted my GS3, but haven't tried flashing different roms yet. the GS3 is a huge upgrade from the laggy tbolt that I had so I haven't seen a need to try and flash ROM's yet. with the tbolt it was a necessity to run a custom ROM, with the GS3... not so much. I've put on GoLauncher to get around the TW launcher, and everything has been pretty smooth so far. I may try flashing something when I get bored one day though.

Ok, ignore my stupid question on tethering. The magic of google has answered it for me!!!

I am in the process of downloading the files for root. I watched the video on rooting via Odin and this is the direction I have decided to take. In the video he mentions that once Odin is done the phone is then rooted and good to go with SU in the app drawer. He then goes on the show how to download ROM manager and install CWM. What is the advantage of this? I really don't have interest in custom ROMs at this point and I want to get OTAs. Do I need to install ROM manager? My only real interest in rooting is tethering and NFL mobile. I would also like to install Google wallet.

Sorry for all the questions, but I don't want to screw it up. I paid full price for this darn thing I don't don't need any extra paper weights.

Yes. With Verizon's new "share everything" plan, you can use Mobile Hotspot all you want, but you still have to stay within your data allowance.

Previously, when unlimited plans were available, you had to purchase an additional plan to use the builtin hotspot, but now that data is capped, you're free to use that data however you see fit (mobile or tether). Now, back with the unlimited plans, the advantage to rooting and using a 3rd party tether app was that it masked the traffic as "mobile" data, rather than "hotspot" data (excuse me for not knowing the technical terms), so you could avoid the additional mobile hotspot fee by using them.

So, unless you're still on a grandfathered unlimited plan (or any "old" data plan), there is really no difference in what you use...builtin MH or 3rd party tether app. If you're on a "share everything" capped data plan, don't think that you're getting anything for free! (I'd check my data usage to be sure).

I believe the link you posted is simply a method to use the builtin MH without it checking for a subscription (which you would need if you are still on an "old" data plan).

Of course, this is just my understanding, if anyone has information to the contrary, please feel free to chime in and correct me.

If you rooted and installed a 3rd party tether app, yes, you could. Do be aware, however, that by doing so you are in violation of Verizon's TOS. I've never heard stories of them bringing the hammer down on anyone for it, but it's not like I've done much research into that subject either.

Yes, I have the 6GB Share Plan and at the present time I ONLY get dinged (Data Useage) while looking at the Internet ON MY PHONE. Now, when I Tether a Device (PS Vita, Xoom, EVO View 4G, Galaxy Player 5.0 etc.) to my SGSIII and use the Mobile Hotspot NO Data is being used as far as Verizon is concerned. The Tethering Software I use prevents Verizon from seeing that I have ANYTHING Tethered to my Phone. I have had the SGSIII for 3 weeks now and my Data Useage is at 1.5GB ALL the while I have Tethered ALL the above Devices to my Phone and Surfed the Net, Watched Netflix (Many Times) and NOT have occurred ANY Data Useage for said devices (as I have the Verizon Data Widget and watch my Data Useage. I also check my Account on Verizon Wireless and my Data Useage is 1.5GB so far). I just think people don't understand how Free Tethering Works and just Assume that whenever a Device is Tethered you automatically get Data Charges Occurring. This is NOT the case when you are Rooted.

Go back to this link and Read Page 3 (Posts 23-27) and they explain that the Tethering that is being used Bypasses the Verizon Checks and that NO DATA is being used when using this Tethering Method.

No offense, but I'm pretty sure I do know how "free tethering works", and if you really aren't accruing data while using a tether app, consider yourself lucky.

I've been using various wifi tether apps for a long time. On my previous phone, the Thunderbolt, I used all the same tricks -- and while that allowed me to use the tether without having to shell out additional $$$ for mobile hotspot, I assure you my data usage meter would rise each time I used it (although I didn't care that much because I have unlimited data).


Granted, with the new "share everything" plans things may work differently, but the point always has been that you couldn't use the official MH app without adding it to your plan, so you had to root and use a 3rd party app like Wireless Tether to achieve the same thing using your phone's data plan, or hack the official app so that it wouldn't check for a MH subscription first. Yes, these apps would conceal that you had a device tethered, but the data still has to be routed via the phone and the actual data usage on your bill would still show the data used while tethering (but again, when you have unlimited data, who cares?).

I'll be honest, I'm certainly no expert on the subject, but I am a bit shocked if you're truly able to use tether and not incur any data. If that's the case though, good for you, I'm glad it works.
