Who is To Blame for giant phones?

They make money off it because that's how they are marketed. That's all it is. Maybe you aren't brainwashed and genuinely need a larger screen. Fine. I'm glad the makers can accommodate you. But while they are at it, perhaps they can accommodate US - the people who do not need, want or appreciate a 5.5" or larger screen but would be perfectly happy to get the performance they are putting in those pocket hogs. But I guarantee you, the reason those big screens exist is because one day a makers marketing group decided they had to differentiate themselves and then everyone else piled on.

So what if they are brainwashed? If they are convinced that bigger phones are better, then what's the problem? I understand that you want smaller phones, but if the market keeps going like it is, then you're going to have to deal with a bigger phone, or get phones with worse specs

Yeah, it's because here in the US, iPhones are like the face of smartphones, worldwide I think samsung has the most marketshare, but here in the US they are second to Apple

No, iPhones will sell at pretty much any size! Some people buy them because they're small, some because they're made by Apple, and for other reasons

But according to your logic, when the iPhone gets bigger which it will, then the phone won't sell well, which just isn't true

And I use Aviate on a GS5, so my experience is going to be quite different then an iPhone 5s

I'd really like to see where my logic said bigger iPhones won't sell well. I didn't address that either way. And I suspect they will sell well. Again, because Apple makes good phones. I will bet it will attract some current Android users. Maybe a lot of them.

And that last line indicates that you KNOW what the problem we are having with this is. YOU like the bigger phone and therefore WE should like it or shut up. We don't like them. And of course what we like doesn't matter to the manufacturers and they will continue to relegate smaller handsets to midrange phones. And that's too bad because smaller handsets have some advantages.

And I don't disagree with you. I think android should make smaller phones with the big specs that big flagships have

Yeah the Alpha looks good. But look at the specs. It will compete on looks. But by the time it's released, it will be a midrange Android phone. Again. But it will have more horses than my MaxxHD so it may end up in my pocket.

Perhaps once the technology stops evolving so rapidly manufacturers will look to develop niche markets like high-end smaller phones.

What about the specs? Presumably top-end SoC (brand new Exynos or S801 right?), 12MP camera, 32GB storage, 720p SAMOLED display. It's basically the Samsung iPhone 6 Alpha.

It even has metal!

I'm starting to think Apple is losing it's luster. You have phones like the M8 and G3 competing against them. The M8 is arguably the higher quality phone and the G3 isn't far behind. Sony is making some fine hardware too (sadly not available on Verizon). Now and then I have to use the company 5s and I am just not impressed. I have to say my MaxxHD is darned close to the 5s in terms of construction, if not performance. It's not as pretty though.

You might be right. Eventually people will realize their phones are too big. But I'm not sure if the trend will be to go smaller and smaller, or if there will be a happy medium, like in the 4 to 5 inch range

But then again, the market does go to extremes, when mobile phones first came out they were huge, and companies tried to make them as small and compact as they could
Then when touchscreens came out, the trend went to get bigger, I mean look at this 7 inch samsung SMARTPHONE

Who knows. Maybe another technology will come in and render phones obsolete, or at least knock them off their high position

I get most of that is the rise of cheap phones in highly populated areas like China and India but still

Phones with large displays don't sell better than phones with smaller displays. Look at the number of daily activations for Android. Subtract the S5 and Note 3 (because we kinda know those numbers from Samsung bragging). You're left with "all the rest".

Basically, there are FAR more smaller screen devices in the market than larger screen devices. The problem is that they don't have the specs of the larger screen devices. So the manufacturer already knows that small phones sell. It's just easier to market a larger phone as premium because people have a tendency to coincide large size with high-end/premium product.

1.8/1.3ghz octacore. Something like what Motorola put into the Droids, but running faster. So it has potential. But with the smaller battery tey will have to keep it clocked down as much as possible I bet. I may be wrong but here's the thing. Right now we are in a Ghz race, which is getting pointless - much like on PCs. I guess the best comparison again comes back to my old MaxxHD. By todays standards it's slow. But when it's running an app, it's fine. Painting the screen can be kind of jaggy and ugly, but once video is loaded it's good to go. In day to day in app use, it's perfectly fine. I'dlike it to be faster and the Alpha will be. And yeah, it's metal!

back then they were just phones and a small phone is cool. Now they are hand held computers that are also phones and until someone invents a way to fix my broken eyes that doesn't cause headaches, I need a larger hand held computer screen to be able to see it.
