EXACTLY. They won't even let you just buy the phone upfront after the trade-in credit. But it's because they know there's plenty of impatient people like me who will just say eff it, pay off early (losing the majority of that trade credit) and get a new device.

I've been losing my ace by doing this; that's why I decided to go the Samsung route. I get that entire credit upfront, no parsing out micro payments for a ridiculous length of time (3 YEARS).
I used to do the carrier back in the days but no more I get direct from Samsung like you said credit up front.

A few days later I now changed the order to the base Model S25 with 512 GB in Navy Blue. Reasons: I saw the first video reviews of the Ultra Model with the flat sides and it really reminded me on a brick. I always eyed on the smaller S24 model last year, but now the S25 has bigger storage options, Qualcomm processor instead of Exinos... and I really fell in love with the navy blue colour when I saw it in the video reviews

I like the new Ultra form factor and went bigger...

Never could bring mysellf to pony up for one of the hard to hold chonky / front pocket pointy predecessors.

Trade-in on S24+ was decent, along with associated accessory incentives, bitching at Samsung via chat to get the $50 pre-register credit (that never appeared in e-mail) and a total of 16% more discount (14 from Rakuten and 2 from my CC).

I tried getting a Verizon Ultra, and it won't let me do that without involving my Verizon account. It's like they don't want my money. I was going to fully pay for it. I can't get an Unlocked version because then it has no Visual Voicemail. I have a Pixel on my line currently that gets device credits so there is no way I'm just going to pay that off.

I'm on Verizon with unlocked phone and I have visual voicemail. Maybe there's something I'm missing, but I can listen to it or read it thru the voicemail app

Maybe things have changed since I last tried on a S20, thought there were some more recent threads with people having a similar problem. So you don't have to call up your voicemail and your not paying extra for a service? Is the one your using a Samsung app?
On my S20 I had to use a work around using the YouMail app and it wasn't great.

I'll look, but I didn't download any apps. I think if you want to read the text you have to pay, if you just want to listen I think it's free.

I pay the $2.99 a month because I want to be able to read the messages if I'm on the phone.

The free one doesn't have that and half the allowed messages to store.

For those trading in to Samsung.

They will either lose your phone at the destination (happened to me every trade-in) or claim there was damage (hasn't happened to me but plenty others).

Pictures, Pictures, Pictures and stay on top of the website status. If it says delivered and after 2-3 business days of no movement, you need to push to have them fix it.

Pictures take from every angle possible. How you packaged it. How you labeled it. The screen on. Screen off. Hell do a video showing everything works to be safe. Do not allow any wiggle room for a BS value deduction or disqualification. People have gone through it. You don't want to have to.
Four or five trade-ins to Samsung on new purchases (phones and earbuds) and never had one problem with a lost return. I do, as suggested, take massive photos of every legal aspect needed on the return, such as IMEI number, angles to show no damage, shot to shot it was wiped clean and ready for a new setup, loading into the case, in the package, sealed and label affixed to the box and a receipt at the shipping location that the package was received for shipment (Fedex or UPS).

Therefore, a blanket statement stating if you trade in the phone that it will be lost or a claim of damage is reported is a bit overboard.

Can it happen sure; however, with the volume of return phones Samsung is receiving on a daily basis if this was really a problem where all returns failed due to causes noted, I do believe it would be well noted in many places.

I ended up ordering on Wednesday night, I'm trading in my Z Flip 5. While the Flip series has been fun to own, I'm tired of the soft screen and the rather narrow width of the screen, not to mention the lesser cameras. Since I haven't had an S-series since around the S21, it won't bother me with how small the updates are from the S24.

As for the lack of updates, it is something we need to get used to -- cell phones have matured to the point that there aren't a lot of major upgrades year to year, instead it is now mostly limited to slightly faster processors and software improvements, with maybe an improved camera.

Well I thought I would pop in to the shop on my way home from work to see the S25 Ultra, check size and curves etc against my S24 Ultra and to be honest I prefer the slightly more rounded corners, they remind me of the Galaxy Note 3. The S25 Ultra felt great in the hand.
Don't get me wrong I love the boxy shape of the S24 Ultra but the S25 Ultra felt more comfortable with the flat sides. Hence I have pre ordered the S25 Ultra this afternoon ;)

For those interested in whether or not the motion blur in pictures has been resolved on the S25U, here is evidence to the contrary:

Mind you, these pics were taken from the inside of a moving taxi, but if Apple can (continue to) do it, why is Samsung having so much trouble to get it right in 2025? If they have fixed regular-motion indoor pictures of kids, I guess I could get over the non-parity with Apple (and Google) for another year, but this is frustrating.

I honestly considered canceling my S25U pre-order after seeing this and waiting to see if they fix it in the S26...
