Why am I getting a exclamation mark next to my network signal strength sign?

why i am getting a exclamation mark next to my network signal strength sign ?

when my mobile data is not active i am getting a exclamation mark next to the signal strength sign of the carrier on my moto x2.. but as soon as i switch on the mobile data, the H sign appears and the excalamtion disappears and when i switch back off then it comes again, why is that ?

Welcome to AC.

My Nexus 5 does that....an exclamation mark within the signal strength indicator. I assume it simply means that there is no service, in this case because the Mobile Data is off. I don't see that there's anything wrong.
