Email help

This is my first Android device so bear with me. On my Droid Turbo I use my comcast.net email account as it's the only one I've ever had and don't want to change it. Why am I getting so many duplicate entries in my contact list and how can I stop it from happening and eliminate all the dupes? I never had this issue with my Iphone.
Also even though I have the email setting to "never" remove emails from server it still seems to be doing that? If I originally read the email on my phone and delete it from there it doesn't show up when I look for it on my PC Comcast/Xfinity account.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Re: Email help

Welcome to Android Central! The duplicate contacts might be from other social network accounts, like Facebook or Twitter. Go to Settings>Accounts, select one of those accounts (like Facebook), and see if there is a checkbox for Contacts. Uncheck it if you don't want those contacts to sync.

I assume you're using the stock Email app for your Comcast email account. Do you know if the email account settings are set for a POP3 or IMAP server? You can find out by opening Email, tapping the Menu button, selecting the email account, and checking the account's server settings. If it's POP3, that often deletes the email from the server once it gets pushed to your phone. It's an old protocol. IMAP is preferable--see the comparison here: IMAP vs POP3. Here are the Comcast/Xfinity IMAP settings: https://xcsignup.comcast.net/imap_settings.html

If you'd rather not deal with that, consider installing the Xfinity Connect app, which is actually pretty decent. You can use it as your exclusive email app, and can also check your voicemails, and even make wi-fi calls using your Xfinity voice number (if you have one). If you do install Xfinity Connect, you can actually disable the stock Email app and Exchange Services by going to Settings>Apps>All, selecting Email and Exchange Services, and tapping Disable. This will prevent those apps from opening, and potentially giving you dual notifications (e.g., if the Xfinity email was coming in to both the Email app and the Xfinity Connect app).

Re: Email help

Thank you very much. I don't have any social media accounts so no chance of the contact dupes from there. I'll load the Xfinity connect app and give that a try. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Email help

I downloaded the app. When I go into "apps all" I do not see "email and exchange services". All I see is "email"?

Re: Email help

Might I suggest the Blue Mail app as an alternative? I tried it after contacting them with a few questions and was quite surprised how efficient & polished it is. What it is, is what the default app should be. I have 4 email accounts set up, 3 of which are Comcast. Blue Mail set up all of them automatically with only the email address & password required. You can color code each account as you wish, use a unified Inbox if you choose to and multiple select for housekeeping - including, a "delete-all" option in the trash folders. Works with virtually all email protocols & has every option one could expect. I'm pretty picky about my mail functions and IMHO, this is a superb alternative. FWIW, completely free, zero ads.

Re: Email help

So with Blue Mail, if I delete a new email from my phone, can I still view it in my Xfinity account on my PC or will it be deleted from there also?
Thanks.

Re: Email help

I had the same problem with the email app deleting the email from the server . I ended up using the email app K9 problem solved .

Sorry for not being clearer. "Email" and "Exchange Services" are two separate apps that you should be able to Disable in Settings>Apps>All. How is the Xfinity Connect app working for you?

To do that you need to leave a copy on the server. I prefer not to do this myself and don't actually know if Blue Mail offers this option or not. They are very responsive to email inquiries though so if you're interested, shoot them your questions & ask for setup instructions.

EDIT: I checked & if you set up as POP3 then you can opt not to delete mail from the server when downloaded to the mobile app.

I like the app so far but it is still deleting the emails from the server after I delete them from the phone. Frustrated.

Re: Email help

Are you sure the Xfinity app is really saving the mail to your phone? The app is probably just accessing your email just as your web browser would. It might build up some cached data, but you can always clear that out. So I don't think you have to worry about deleting the email on the phone's Xfinity app.

Re: Email help

When I look in apps all there is no "exchange services" listed??

Are you looking in Settings>Apps>All? Exchange Services is pretty standard on most phones, but I can't speak for every one out there.

Re: Email help

I'll try and explain. I loaded the xfinity connect app. I view the emails there. If I delete the email from that app it also deletes it so its not visible when I access my email from home on my PC. It does the same thing if I delete it from the standard email app as well. That's my main concern. I want the original email to remain on my PC. Sorry if I'm not understanding.
Thank you.

I am looking in apps all. This is a new phone so I don't think I've disabled anything but who knows.

Oddly, when I switched from the Maxx to the Turbo my email did the same thing. I think B.Diddy is right because I use a POP3 protocol. I looked at his link at it seems simple enough to change the protocol but I'm too scared to mess with it for fear of making things worse!

Re: Email help

It just doesn't seem right to have to go through all this. I never had any issues on my iPhone. I'm not saying the iPhone is any better but why should I have these problems now? Its just frustrating.

What I mean is that if you don't want to lose an email, don't delete it using the app. The email isn't going to take up permanent space in internal storage, because the app isn't physically downloading every email to your phone. Just view the email using the Xfinity app, and if you want to keep it on the server, leave it alone.

Re: Email help

so even though in the incoming mail setting, I have it set to never delete from server, it is not working correctly?
Thanks again for all your help.
