Why am I unable to connect my mobile and laptop?

I cannot connect my mobile to laptop

HTC1,M8 mobile to computer windows 7 ,32

Are you getting an error message or is the phone not connecting when you plug it in? have you installed the correct drivers for the phone (should happen automatically when you plug it in)

Are you running Android Marshmallow?

If so:

2. Connect phone to computer
3. Power phone on; enter PIN/Pattern if necessary
4. Drag down notification bar from top of phone screen
5. Tap "USB for Charging" (something like that, anyway)
6. Tap "File Transfer"

You have to repeat each time you connect to PC.
