Why am I unable to open downloaded email attachments on my S4?

unable to open downloaded email attachments on S4

i use virginmedia email. since they've migrated their email service i have been unable to open downloaded attachments.
i can open the email. i can download the attachment (doc.x, jpeg etc). but when i try to open the downloaded item it says 'unable to open item'.
ive tested on my partners ipad and it works, so im guessing its the phone thats the problem. any help gratefully received. thank you!

You need an app that can open that kind of file. For a docx file, you need something that can open Word files. For a jpg, the phone should have an app that will open it. (But if the file type is jpeg, not jpg, even though they're the same file type, the picture apps you have may not recognize it.)
