Why am I unable to purchase new Kindle books thru Kindle App?

HTC One M8 device. Android Lollipop.
Kindle app was working previous to upgrade.

I have uninstalled Kindle App, deleted cache, etc. and then reinstalled app. I cannot delete Chrome (part of the Lollipop upgrade?)
I have done a power-on cache wipe by pressing <power><down volume> button and clearing cache.

Kindle app starts fine, and syncs to show my current selection of books, however now when I go to purchase a book with it it brings up a browser (choose regular browser or Chrome) and when I select the browser and click <just once> or <always> a blank web page comes up showing "About:blank" - sits there, and eventually dies.

Phone is not rooted nor do I want to root it.

Welcome to Android Central! Just wondering--do you have to install the Amazon app along with Kindle now in order to purchase a book?

Another thing to try would be to install another browser (like Dolphin, for example), and see if it works with that browser.
