Why are blocks showing up instead of text?

Blocks showing up instead of text issue

On my lock screen and on some of the other screens on my phone instead of text I am getting large blocks covering the text. This goes away for a short period after restarting but always comes back after a few hours. Anyone else have this issue or know how to resolve it?

There's another thread about the same problem. For some people wiping the cache partition did the trick. Take a look.

Is there one block for each and every letter, or are the blocks covering multiple letters/words?
