Why are my email counters getting stuck?

Yet Another Stuck Email Counter!

I have seen several posts all over the internet with this or similar problems, but none of the discussions seem to be fully and absolutely resolved: The email icon on the home page (the default Samsung email app) shows unread emails, but even after I read them and/or trash them the icon still shows "1"

I have three accounts set up in the email app, and the Combined Inbox shows no unread count, yet the Inbox for by Gmail account indicates there is one. This is weird, no? Why wouldn't the combined inbox also show one? But I digress: how can I find that invisible unread message?

I have tried clearing cache of the email app, and the cache and data of the BadgeProvider app (which apparently is the app which controls all such notifications)...but this, I'm thinking, still wouldn't explain the odd count within the app where the individual inbox indicates one unread message, yet the combined inbox indicates none.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Ragg

Re: Yet Another Stuck Email Counter!

If they're all Google accounts, go to each one, on the check box, pull it down and click all, then check the box, go to More and Mark as read.

That should mark all your emails as read. Restart the phone and you shouldn't see any message badge.

Re: Yet Another Stuck Email Counter!

I followed your suggestion and also tried "Sort by Unread" (hoping the mysterious missing message would move to the top) and nothing worked. Finally I deleted a bunch, since I had them available on my laptop, and went to the Gmail website to make sure I didn't have any unreads there (I did have a few in the "Important" folder! Don't know how they got there...a couple of them were simply marketing emails from companies I allow to send)...now, the counter on the phone has finally been reset. No idea what did it, but hopefully it's gone for good. Very annoying. Thanks for your input.

Re: Yet Another Stuck Email Counter!

I have a problem with my Gmail icon that is sort ot the opposite of this. I have 3 email accounts. Two of them are tied to what I guess is the Samsung email app on my S5. I also have the Gmail app and that gmail account is completely separate from the other two. I get my gmails fine and I see the notifications on the lock screen (running Lollipop) but the icon never shows an unread email badge. I'm not sure I like the lock screen notifications and I might turn them off so it would be worse then. The only way to know I have an unread gmail is to open the app and look. Not too convenient. Any suggestions? I'm brand new to android so maybe I'm missing something.

Re: Yet Another Stuck Email Counter!

I found a cure for the stuck unread email icon finally, thought I would share if anyone was interested. The solution (link Attached) was to go into the app manager and go to "all." From there look for "BadgeProvide." Select that in then clear the data. The article says some folks have to restart the phone to get it to work, I did. Once the reboot was complete no more mystery unread icon.

Thank you so much 68bucks!!!! I've had the same problem with my phone for a couple of weeks and couldn't for the life of me figure out what was going on. It was driving me nuts!!! I really appreciate it.
