Why are my messages deleting?

My messages get deleted

I have a droid maxx and have recently been experiencing problems when background data is active due to a low battery. When the data is restricted and I get a group message or attached file message like a picture my phone give me a retrieval fail notification and when I click on it the notification goes away but I don't received the message. Can anyone explain why this happens and what can I do to prevent this or receive my message?

Welcome to Android Central! Do you mean that when your battery runs low, the phone automatically restricts background data? If so, then try turning off whatever power saving modes turn on when the battery is low. Or go to Settings>Data Usage​, and turn off Restrict Background Data.

I noticed that as well.

I made Google Hangouts my default SMS app and have had no problems since.
