Why are photos blacked out in Google photos gallery?

I have found on my boyfriends phone photos that are blacked out, but in the details feature there is information registered as if an actual photo had been taken. I gave seen this on multiple phones he has owned over the years. Am I missing something?

Probably just accidental photos of the inside of his pocket. Don't get jealous of the pocket.
