Why are photos so large ?

When I open a photo that I took with my phone and then sent to my email address, these photos are huge. Photoshop shows them to be 45 x 27 inches at 72 pixels/inch resolution. Others tell me that the photos they receive from me in an email, are similarly huge.

According to photoshop, the resolution is low, at 72 p/i.
Why are these images so pointlessly large, and how can I remedy this problem ?

Go in the camera settings and lower the resolution...

Yeah what they said but if you go into your camera settings, and into resolution you can adjust this to make them smaller if need be.

lowering the resolution won't matter so much.
you can even make the resolution 300 and it won't make it larger if it is constrained in your image editing settings.
resizing is the better method.
