Why are these speeds so slow?

Hi,

I have a new Moto X GSM Developer Edition and, just recently, ported my number over from Page Plus to the AT&T network on Straight Talk. I very carefully set the APN settings to that seen online on also on Straight Talks website. Phone calls and text messages appear to be working fine but we are having what I consider to be serious data deficiencies. We've had regular situations where Google Maps will not work due to a network error and extremely slow page loads in the browser. I downloaded the mobile version Speedtest app and got the listed speeds over the last two days. Note that there are WiFi tests mixed in the data. This is when I was connecting the phone to my FIOS router with a strong wifi signal to see how that compared to the 4G data speeds. The final two readings were the speed test results from connecting my laptop to the same router to see how my laptop wifi speeds compared to my phone wifi.

Do you have any suggestions as to what could be happening? Is the phone defective? The non-wifi tests were done with between 2 and 4 bars of 4G or 4GLTE indicated data. The wifi tests were done with a strong signal and you can see that similar speeds on my laptop were many times higher on a similar connection. Bottom line is that the phone is a data dog whether connected to the mobile network or wifi. I've called Straight Talk tech support and they had my try several things that didn't help anything such as reentering APN settings, restarting the phone, turning wifi off, etc. I'm now thinking that the problem is with the phone and not with the service. Someone else sitting beside me on an iPhone using Net10 service was getting good speeds when I wasn't getting much of anything.

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

I can only give you advice on Straight Talk. They are the WORST reseller you could ever use. If you read their TOS, they do not permit watching videos or streaming music. If you use too much data in one day they will severely restrict your speeds going forward until the next billing cycle. If you are running speed tests they will know and eventually slow you down. This is not hearsay, as I actually experienced this when I switched my iPhone over to their service. I'm currently using t-mobile on their $30 plan and I love it (100 min unlimited data and text). They supposedly throttle you are 5gb but I don't ever use that much data. As to your slow speeds, I would try to reset the network settings. It makes no sense why WIFI is slow too. If that fails, I would contact Motorola as it may be a bad unit. Let us know how you make out.

The problem is with the service. Don't expect the level of AT&T branded post paid service on a prepaid MVNO.
