Why aren't I receiving Gmail push notifications on the Galaxy S6?

Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

I've been enjoying my new Galaxy S6 for the past couple days but one thing I've noticed is that I'm not receiving any Gmail push notifications. I only ever notice new emails getting pulled in when I open the Gmail (or Inbox) app, and it executes a refresh now that the app is open. If I'm not using the app or my phone's screen is off -- nothing.

I've tried a number of different things, including making sure Power Saving mode is turned off and ensuring that auto sync is enabled for my Google account. I've also made sure that all the appropriate Gmail labels are set to notify me.

One thing I've noticed, in the process of discovery for my Gmail issues, is that when looking at my Google sync information on my phone, the "last synced at" time is usually very out of date.. sometimes it's a couple hours ago, sometimes it's a day ago. I'm wondering if my phone is for some reason just not polling on a regular, more reasonable interval.

FYI I'm getting push notifications from other apps (including Hangouts) as expected.

Is anyone experiencing the same scenario with the S6 (or perhaps something similar with the Note 4 or S5)? Where you able to fix it somehow? Any insights would be helpful.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

Have you tried going into the settings of the GMail application itself and making sure that GMail is set to sync? Not just in the Google accounts menu but the actual GMail application.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

I have checked and double checked my Gmail/Inbox settings (I'm currently using both to make sure it's not an Inbox-specific issue). I'm migrating to the S6 from a Nexus 5 - both are configured the same way, and my Nexus 5 receives Gmail push notifications within seconds of emails being delivered.

It sounds like everything is set up right. The only other thing I can say is try going in to settings, applications, Application Manager, go do the Gmail app and clear the data to reset it.

Go to Apps settings and Clear Data on Google Services Framework and Gmail, you will need to set your accounts on Gmail again, but it's the easiest way.

If it still does the same, sorry, but you will need to Delete the Google Account and add it again and after that check all the Google Apps that it affects to see if everything is back to normal, then set your Gmail app with Push Notifications and all and see. I've needed to do this in the past a couple of times with different phones, Xperia Z3 and my current OnePlus One.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

This happened to me after the last Gmail update on my M7. Might be unrelated to your problems (in which case sorry for wasting your time!), but what I had to do was go into Gmail-->Settings-->"your email address"-->and set "Days of mail to sync" to 30, 60 or all. Mine got reset to 0 for some reason, and that stopped my push.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

I wanted to provide an update to everyone in the thread:

I've gone through every suggestion that folks gave me (thank you, by the way), and I'm still in the same position as when I started. I'm still not receiving Gmail push notifications in a timely manner - I only ever notice new emails when I actually jump into the app and manually execute a refresh. The absolute last resort would be to factory reset and/or check with my carrier to see if there's something screwy with my device. Needless to say this is frustrating, but perhaps I need to reevaluate my life (e.g. do I really need to have emails pushed to me instantly??) rather than harp on the issue. :-)

While I'm evaluating, if anyone has any other suggestions I'd be happy to field them.

I'm having the same issue on my N6 since the last app update...

Perhaps a test to see if push works in a different email program? I use the new Microsoft Outlook app and love it. Worth a shot...

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

Thank you for the suggestion, Techno-guy, of trying Outlook. As it so happens, I do receive my push notifications with Outlook almost immediately. This is leading me to believe that there's something screwy going on with the Gmail (and Inbox) app. Honestly, I'd prefer to use the Inbox (or even Gmail) app, so this still doesn't solve my underlying issue. Peculiar problem, though. It's good to eliminate some more variables.

If you did the data reset on both Framework and Gmail apps and still the same, Did you delete your Google Account and set it again? I'm asking because you summarized that you did everything that has been suggested but my experiences with your same issue in previous phones have always been solved either with the Clear Data or deleting the Google Account and set it again.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

erasat - After discovering that clearing the Framework and Gmail data didn't solve the issue, I did delete the Google account from the phone entirely and re-add.

So if you did this and the Gmail sync settings are fine in the app and in the Google account definitely you have a bigger issue, you can always try doing a factory reset and for the last option replacing the phone. Remember that if you decide to replace you'll need to redo ALL your settings again so the factory reset may be an option also.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

Wanted to provide an update: I finally bit the bullet and did a factory reset on the device. Early signs are good - I'm now receiving my email notifications in a timely manner.

Something noteworthy: Going through the setup process again, I went through a more manual/traditional restore method. The first time I setup the device I used the "Tap & Go" exchange of data from my old phone. This time, I just went through a manual process and chose my old phone as the reference (for which apps to download). I'm not sure if this played any significant role, but it's something to pay attention to.

I totally forgot that this happened to me when I moved from the S5 to the Note 4, just like that, it also has happened when I restore data and apps using Hellium, I need to forget about restoring Gmail because if I do the same occurs, so it definitely doesn't like restore or passing Gmail settings from other devices.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

I have an S6 edge. I had the same exact problem as the OP after migrating my info from my old S3. All notifications worked expect the Gmail ones.

I got around resetting my phone, see below:

-Open Gmail app
-Settings for app
-Select your email account
-Make sure sync Gmail is checked (mine was)
-Select days of mail to sync, change to desired setting
-Select Manage Labels *important*
Here is where mine wasn't right. Go over this list, set days to sync for what you want here (like the primary inbox, mine wasn't set to sync!)

Even doing this, it's not going to work right away - it needs time to sync up.

I suggest doing this just to make sure it does it:
-Settings in your phone
-Personal section , then select accounts
-Select Google
-Select your Gmail account
It should show Gmail syncing
-Turn Gmail sync off, then turn it back on

When it's finished syncing this time (may take awhile) - - your notifications should start working again!

Some of these steps may not be needed, but it worked for me. I made an account to share the info!

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

My Gmail app stopped receiving push notifications a while back after I upgraded (is that the right word for it?) to Android Lollipop and installed the latest Gmail app.

Like you I tried absolutely everything and frustratingly the notifications would work for a few hours occasionally and then stop again. Eventually I was absent mindedly refreshing my Inbox every 5 minutes just to make sure I hadn't missed any important emails.

The solution to this problem, and ultimately the reason that I still have some hair, was an app on the Play Store called Fix Gmail Push Notifications (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fixgmailpushnotifications.com). All you do is install the app and and the problems go away for good. :O

FIXED!

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

I'm also having this problem and have tried everything with no success at all.

They were working when I set up the phone but stopped a few hours later. HELP :p

I'm getting them just fine while connected to Wifi but none when the Wifi is off.
