Why can I only make phone calls with speaker phone on S4?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4, when I try to make a call I can only make a call if I do it on speaker phone, it keeps on saying headphones connected, although I have never connected my earphones to my device.

I have restored my factory settings and after 10 minutes the icon headset connected appears again, where I can then only make a call on speaker phone.

What can I do. Is the worth repairing and how much. or just buy a new phone, as to from day one I got my Samsung it has given me problems

sounds like you have two metal contacts contacting each other inside the headphone jack. If you never put anything in there, it might be faulty. If something accidentally got in there, you might be able to get it out by blowing on it, or sticking a headphone plug in there.
