Why can I only send/receive texts with no SD card inserted?

I have an LG Tribute android phone, and an 8gb SD card that is pretty old. I noticed last week I'm not able to send or receive texts, and on the rare occasion I am, the text takes over a day to send. I noticed while transferring photos from my SD card today that once my SD card is removed, I get a large flood of texts that I wasn't able to receive while it was inserted. Texts send fine too provided no SD card is inserted. I called Virgin Mobile and they said they will have a service tech "check out the towers" which sounded like a way to get me off the phones.

Put the card into a Windows PC (the card, not a cable from the phone). Read Using chkdsk to fix a corrupted SD card. It sounds like a bad card.
