Why can't I delete messages from my Galaxy 5 combined in-box?

My combined in-box is getting larger and larger. Deleting these messages doesn't help.

I assume you are referring to E-mail.
Combined GMail and what else?
You could log into the system on a PC or laptop and go through the Inbox that way.

I generally delete all messages from my Galaxy 5 since almost all my emailing using Windows Live Mail is done through my computer. Nonetheless, the combined inbox listing of saved messages on my priority email account through Mindspring is creeping up - it's now 756 messages; the Gmail saved message count is zero. My main worry is that the unwanted saved messages will start to impact the system memory.
