Android Central Question

Ever since my LG V30 upgraded to android Pie, I cannot get to a sign on screen to access internet in my local stores. I have tried many things, especially "forgetting" the connection and establishing again multiple times. The only way I found I can get a sign on screen is to first do a "Network settings reset" through Settings app, which is a huge pain, including having to pair the phone in my car every time. If I walk into a store that does not require a sign on screen, I get an immediate connection. I also have no problem connecting to Wifi at home. Any suggestions how to fix?

Welcome to Android Central! First, go to Settings>Apps, tap Menu>Show System, and see if you can find a system app called CaptivePortalLogin. If you find it, make sure it isn't Disabled.

If that's not the case, then what happens if you open the browser and enter any common URL, like cnn.com? Does it automatically redirect you to the wi-fi login screen for that network?

Thanks, I did try to open a common web page with my chrome browser and was not redirected. I did find CaptivePortalLogin and it seems to be active (not force stopped and no option to disable).

I do have an account a established a few years back, but I guess I forgot to login before posting a question.

can you get the log in portal when you open a browser? I know for a while at KFC, it would only get the portal only when opening a browser. It was not a login but had to agree to the user agreement. just wondering, do you have nfc turned on?

also, go to settings, connections, wifi, advanced and see if anything from there will help. finally the next time you are in the store and get connected, go to settings, connections, wifi and click the gear beside the connection. make sure auto reconnect is selected.

settings may differ because of different phones so the paths should be close since it is also pie.

It seems about everything I was thinking was suggested but I have one caveat to the web page suggestion. I've found that my phone remembers the last page I was on and even the tabs, if I had any open, so for me I usually have to type in a URL, for me Google.com, before being offered the acceptance request.

Aside from that I think an app may be the something to look at. Are you running any "saver" apps (data, battery ect.) or any security apps? I know Verizon and Samsung are kind of pushing theirs by preinstalling them and other not so gentle persuasions. Safe mode as suggested would be a good way to count out any app interference if you can remember to do it.

I guess you were referring to what I said. What happened to me was as soon as I opened the browser, the kfc page appeared. It made no difference as to what was already opened in the tabs. I had to agree before I could even use the wifi even for an app.

When I took my daughter to the hospital they had signs indicating free WiFi was available but when I connected none of my apps would update. Like most I opened my browser in search of an acceptance page and only found my last page browsed. It wasn't until I manually input Google that I got redirected. Meanwhile I've experienced the opposite as well, being redirected as soon as opening the browser. What's the difference between the two, I'm not sure. Was it just that I had actually closed my browser the one time and the other it was still being held in my background apps? Was it a difference in how they set up the WiFi? I can't say why it was this way just that it was. Really is there any harm in trying if they hadn't?

No luck. I went to the market this morning and was able to get "Connected, but no internet access", but then was unable to get the sign on screen. Tried safe mode, still no luck. Then tried to open a web page with Chrome, Opera, Firefox browsers. Just got a message such as "this page cannot be reached". Finally, I did a Network Settings Reset and was able to access the internet. I am wondering if this is a LG and/or Verizon issue with the recent upgrade I got on my LG V30 to Android Pie. I called Verizon for technical assistance, but they were no help. Not sure what to try next.

They never are - they're not in the cellphone business, they're in the sell phone business.

Go to Settings, search for feedback and send feedback about it. (You could also try LG tech support, but I have no idea how good they are, I've never called them.)

I agree with the "sell phone" statement 100 percent. Most times they simply try to get you to reset your device, although in this case it might be worth a try and here's why...

A lot of big updates, more in the past and less these days, almost required a factory reset. So upgrading from one OS to the next type updates. There would be little bugs and factory resetting the device seemed to eliminate them.

We haven't seen any other complaints like this which points to it being a bug and it happened right after a big update.

Just something to consider...

I just might of had some success today. Yesterday I cleared both cache and data from CaptivePortalLogin. Today I was in a market and was able to get a wifi sign on screen! This is good news, but it was not the market that I frequent the most where the problem was so severe. I will not be back there for a day or two, but perhaps I am on the right track. As a last resort I will do a factory reset, as much of a pain it will be to reconfigure all my apps and settings.

I had partial success today. I was at my local market and could not get a sign on screen. I then went into my apps and cleared the cache and data from CaptivePortalLogin. Immediately, I was able to get the wifi sign on screen! If I have to do this every time, it is a couple of extra steps, but at least it works. If there is a bug with the LG V30 after the Android Pie upgrade, then perhaps LG will issue a patch. I can only hope!

Glad that you're having at least some success! Send feedback to LG and/or Google in the system settings, under the Help/Feedback section.

Success! I downloaded a third party app, appropriately named "WiFi Portal Opener" in the Play Store, or it is titled "Show WiFi Login Screen" on the phone. It works well in 2 markets I visited since I installed!
