Why can't I get rid of an unread message badge when there are no unread messages?

Android Central Question

I'm using a pixel 2 xl with evie launcher and my phone is fully updated to 8.1. Just today this problem started. There is always showing an unread message badge even though I have no unread messages. I have gone through every conversation to make sure they are read, rebooted the phone, uninstalled and reinstalled the launcher, changed sms apps (it follows whichever app I am on), deleted all app data for messages, and cleared cache. The only way I can get rid of it is turning off unread badge notifications completely which is not ideal because I like to see how many messages I have.

I am very frustrated and don't want to factory reset my phone. Has anyone encountered this problem and have advice on how to fix it?

Hi Ry,

Thanks for the reply. I am OP for this question but just made this account so I could reply.

I tried that for all threads in the past 2 weeks and the issue remains. Is it possible that it could be from an old thread? I have never had this issue until about 3 hours ago.

If this makes a difference; I have been using pulse exclusively for the last few months but decided today to switch back to android messages. Feels unlikely that it was a coincidence but I have no idea how to resolve the issue.

Have you tried checking via Verizon Messages+?

Yes, I have the same problem when I checked verizon messages +.

I went through and individually deleted every message thread and that fixed the problem for a bit. I thought the problem was gone but it came back a few days later and now says '2'.

I think it has something to do with group texts but I cant figure out what the issue is or how to fix it.

Welcome to Android Central! If this continues to be an issue and you don't mind setting up your homescreens again, you can try deleting all app cache and data for Evie Launcher.

I have a OnePlus 6T Android 9.0.5 (OxygenOS). The moment i installed the Evie Launcher is when i got the unread badge notifications on my default SMS app; i've also run through all the messages, with no reduction in the number. In fact, when i new group chat was opened, the number of "unread" messages went up by 1 (from 2 to 3).

The messages stuck as "unread" seem to be from group chats. Even when i use a third-party SMS app such as Textra, the notification badge still states that i have unread messages.
