Why can't I get to my photos? It says the file type is not supported

I took photos at my friends memorial service for her husband. All seemed to be fine. No warnings or anything. The next day only a few of the first ones were there with the picture showing. The rest of them, and there were a lot of them, when I tried to open them they said the file type was not supported. ????? So how/why would my phone camera take pictures if I couldn't get back to them. They are important, to me, as I was going to burn these pictures and videos on a DVD for her. Something to have for the rest of her life. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Look on Google Photos to see if they were backed up (they should be by default). You can download the ones you want to print, and print them. (If they're backed up, all you have on the phone are thumbnails [small versions of the pictures], and you can't print a thumbnail.)
