Why can't I open a new tab in Android Chrome?

cannot open new tab in android chrome

So I have a Samsung galaxy note 4 and this morning when I woke up I turned on my phone and made a few calls. then I went to chrome and tried opening a new tab. when I push the top left "+" button to add a tab it does nothing. but when I go to the right with the dropdown and click "new tab" it opens a new tab. frustrated I restarted my phone and it began working until about 30 minutes later when I again tried to open a new tab with the "+" and again it wont open without going to the drop down and clicking "new tab". anybody got a solution?

Open system settings > applications > sort by all > chrome > clear cache.

I think they removed this option after the latest Chrome update.

Try clearing data in Settings < Apps < System Apps < Chrome < Clear Data

Reboot, clear data, and reinstall is usually the order I take for debugging weird issues such as this. Thankfully everything's backed up and synced if you've logged in with a Google Account into Chrome
