Why cant i see emoji

I have an LG G3 running 5.0.1. My girlfriend has an IPhone and when she sends me emojis i cant see some of them. i looked up the wikipedia page for the unicode standard for emoji, and my phone cant display all of them. How do i fix this problem? I have tried 3rd party keyboards, that doesnt fix it. i have also tried other sms apps which hasnt fixed it. Should i root my phone?

Re: Why cant i see emoji

What language is your device set for (Settings, Language & Input)?

Some emoticons are not standard, or not popular enough to be supported by all devices/OS's/keyboards/languages.

So if you go to a specific webpage (e.g. like the unicode standard page that you mentioned), what ones do not display properly or show squares? For example, if you go to:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoji

What can you see? Even on my desktop browser, I can't see every single emoticon.*

Also in that article I linked, it is stated that some older iPhones use a *"Softbank Unicode Private Use Area" for emoticons. Meaning, no one that doesn't have an iPhone can see anything but squares or squiggles either.
