Why can't I turn off or adjust Google Messages notifications?

I am too having the same issue. I am on a OG Pixel XL. I was on Android Q DP4 and rolled back to Android P with June's security patch. Tried installing a third party app and setting it as my default, disabled Google Messages, rebooted, re enabled Google messages etc. Still the same issue and it is driving me nuts.

Just checked my wife's OG non XL Pixel and hers too is greyed out. But she already had the option turned off to not show the messages for web notification. But she is stuck and cannot make any changes. She was never on Q and she is on the current June update.

I have the exact same issue. I cannot turn off notifications for messages. It's greyed out. Anyone figure out a resolution! I'm in a couple of group chats and cannot disable the notifications unless I switch to an 3rd party app

Agreed, I switched to textra for now until they fix this. I have tried literally everything except a factory reset.

I've tried all methods and still the same issue

Im left thinking that this is tied to the Web Message attaching, as posted above, and possibly the greyed out Nicole contact . That sticks out as if you are in an active web chat, and can't silence the notification while doing so.

Another bump from someone with the same issue. P3 on Android P and all of my options to disable notification categories are grayed out

Still having the issue on my Pixel 2 Android 9 not beta program

One possible difference here is that I'm on the Google Messages beta. If you're able to sign up for the beta, then see if that version of Messages allows you to turn off notifications.

I'm trying to change my notification sound for just Messages. This is what I get.
