Why can't I update the software on my Samsung Galaxy S4?

I bought a Galaxy s4 on Verizon and got it switched to Straight Talk. Now when I check for software updates it says I'm updated and I know I'm at least 3 updates behind. Does it have to be on the original carrier to update? Thanks!

Samsung is in charge of updating your phone. Once Samsung has the update ready, it has to be cleared by the carrier. If Samsung doesn't make an update, then your phone won't be updated. Unfortunately for you, Samsung may not be planning on updating the GS4. If you want a newer version of Android, you can root your phone and unlock the bootloader to flash a new version from a 3rd party. Keep in mind that doing this will void warranty.
