Why can't we share pictures from WhatsApp chats directly to gallery

There used to be such an option earlier.

Gallery isn't a place, it's an app - that shows all pictures in a file format it can display. So you save the picture, then either restart the phone, or use an app like media.Re.Scan, to add the picture to the media database. (Taking a picture triggers it, downloading files doesn't.)
