Why clean install lollipop? Tutorial on step by step? (Not rooted)

Since the ota update the battery life has been horrible. It's gotten much slower as well. After doing summer research it seems that a clean install may help. I would like to know If this is true and why.

You could try wiping the cache partition. You won't lose any personal data with that process.

By clean install I'm assuming they mean a factory reset. I've seen people do this to correct the problem your having but it will erase all your data. It wipes out all the data that could be interfering with normal operation. It can be done on the same menu as the one to wipe the cache partition, but try that first then a factory reset as a last resort.
