Why did my Moto G just die?

I have a moto g rooted. I had 45% and when I press the power button it just started to boot up. After it boot up it said batter low on 1%. So it is charging now. Any clue what happened. My friend said it just happens once.

Fairly frequently reported but rarely occurring bug with battery sensor, normally (but not exclusively) happens after charging from a PC rather than a wall charger. Never seen it myself.
