Why do I get 2 different notification tones

In Whatsapp, while I'm on a regular chat with someone, I get randomly (apparently) 2 different tones when the other person replies, one is the system default (flowers) and another very annoying one, some sort of gong sound. I can't figure out what triggers the second one. Sometimes is one sometimes is the other ...
When I go to settings I can only set the tone for message and for group and both are set to default.
Can anyone solve this mystery please?

I'm running Android 6.01 on a Galaxy Note 3

Do you ever access WhatsApp from the mobile website on your phone's browser? If so, you might have allowed the browser to give you notifications for WhatsApp as well.

Go to the stock app and make sure notifications are disabled. I had the same problem when using a different messaging app than the stock android app.

Sorry, what do you mean by 'stock app'. What app, Whatsapp? I just have the regular app installed from Google store ...
Are you asking me to disable the whatsapp notifications?. Can you clarify? Thanks.

I never access whatsapp from the browser, only from the app itself.

I am guessing that you are using WhatsApp instead of the messaging app that was preloaded on the phone. If you have not disabled the notifications on the stock app they will still appear along with the ones from WhatsApp. Go into the stock app and disable all notifications and see if that clears it up for you. I had that problem when I had installed Signal messaging app and forgot to disable the stock app. Annoying to see and hear two notifications from one conversation.

That's not it. I use textra for messaging and Whatsapp only accasionally. The chime that I have in Textra is totally different. I don't have any other messaging app with the 'weird' second chime that I mention in the OP. I don't know where it comes from or when. It's not that I get two notifications per message, no, sometimes I get the one set in whatsapp and sometimes I get this other one (which it's not in the notifications setting).
Nevermind, it's not a huge deal, only a puzzle and to be honest, quite annoying.

Sorry about the delay ...
I have them enabled.
My turn to say sorry for the delay :) I'm not sure if this will apply to your issue but there are two different tones from WhatsApp. One is when you are not using the app (Flowers in your case) and the other one is the 'Conversation tone' when your are using it (maybe the gong sound you mentioned). Switch that option off and see if the issue persists.

Thanks Javier, I have both tones to the same and it's not the stupid gong ... :)
It's ok, I can live with it I guess.
