Why do I have Blurry Contact Pics?

Blurry Contact Pics

When uploading my pics for my contacts, (doesn't matter if they're taken from FB or taken with camera), they upload blurry/compressed.

I spent 4.5/hours with customer service agents from Verizon to Motorola. They concluded I needed to exchange my brand new phone after a factory reset and several "cache and data clearings" did not work.

The new phone is doing the exact same thing. I thought I could just deal with the contacts being blurred, until I tried to upload a profile pic onto Skype & I couldn't make it out.

Factory reset does not work for this. Nor does clearing the cache/data.
Clearly the liklihood of two new phones being defective is slim.

Please tell me someone out there knows how to fix this, as Motorola has told me they have no answers and to look to the forums.

Thank you.

Can't believe they suggested exchanging your phone over this problem.

(I'm assuming you know how to use your phone's "edit contact photo" software to crop a photo of a person's head?)

First off you need to start with close-up pictures of people, preferably head shots. I know that isn't always possible. But if you are getting contact photo pics from a photo of a group shot of people, zooming in on their head, cropping it, and then uploading them, they will be blurry. The more close-up the shot, the better the results. A decent photo of a couple of people from the waist up should yield good quality contact pic shots, after cropping. Generally speaking you want to end up with a head shot that goes vertically from chin to top of head and horizontally from ear to ear. Your avatar photo is pretty good example though I might have tightened it up a bit.

How was the quality of the contact photos from your old phone? (Did you have contact photos?) Perhaps post one of them here and I can download it and analyze it.

You may have to request photos of head shots from your favorite contacts. With all the selfies that people are taking of themselves there ought to be plenty! Otherwise you might need to take new photos of as many contacts as possible. Another source I've found to be useful is photo Christmas cards. I scan the Christmas card, open a photo editing program and crop the head shot, then load it onto my phone.

The bottom line is you need good quality, somewhat close-up photos to start with or you will get blurry contact photos.

Re: Blurry Contact Pics

This happens with wallpaper and other images as well.

A quick fix I use frequently is.... open the picture or image on your phone....then...take a screen shot of the picture.

When you use a picture or image as background or contacts pictures, select the screen shot of the picture, not the actual picture. You will be able to crop the image without too much pixel distortion, also you will find the clarity is good enough to work.

My two cents...

Re: Blurry Contact Pics

This happened on my RAZR Maxx once I synced with FB and used those contact pics. However, as the Turbo doesn't sync with FB the same way, the contact pictures I manually added look good. I think this goes back to a FB pic quality issue.

I have the same problem, and I'm sure thousands of others do to. Logically speaking, if you take a picture with your Nexus5x (or import one), and it's clear and not "fuzzy", then importing this picture in your contacts' profile should not significantly alter the quality of the picture. However, sometimes if you wait a few seconds, the picture will clear up. Weird science dude.
