Why do I have to restart my phone when I disconnect from wi-fi?

Every time I disconnect my wifi, or go out of reach, my phone connection stops working entirely. So I don't receive any messages or emails at all unless I restart my phone with the wi-fi disconnected. I had problems with the Lollipop upgrade, but after rebooting my phone it has been great, bar this last glitch.
