Verizon Galaxy S8 Why do I keep seeing the app drawer when swiping sideways?

Even slightly diagonal swipes to see the other home screens cause the app drawer to appear. Does anyone else have this problem? I'm in good shape, fully ambidextrous, and using the same gestures I've used for years with S6 and other models. It can't be *that* loosely defined for swipe up. It would be so much better if only 70-80 degree vertical swipes registered as up/down for app drawer.
