Why do text messages make my screen turn on?

Anybody know how to turn this feature off?
When I get a text or an email the screen turns on. I think the tone and lights is enough
to let me know I have a text. It's really annoying when I take my phone out and I've managed
to access random apps because my screen was on because of a text.
If you know how to disable this please let me know :)

Is the option to display a preview of the message activated? If so, that might be what's causing it... I don't really know if mine does it or not, I seldom use SMS :P

Don't know about the s4 but on the s3 you couldn't turn it off unless you downloaded a third party SMS app and disabled it in there.

Do you use a lock screen on your phone? This prevents it from accidently opening apps

What is the 3rd party app that allowed you to disable this on the S3? Because I would like to give it a shot on the S4.
