Why do we want wifi calling g so badly?

Simple for me at least. I work in a place that is shielded from cell transmission. I need to get phone calls and texts though. This allows me to be connected even of I have no signal. I don't think tmo is allowing free wifi calling anymore but the increased coverage is priceless

Saves minutes (although I have unlimited), wifi is FAR more reliable than cell towers within buildings, and wifi calling overseas will be free.

And there is absolutely NO reason T-Mo should charge for it since we will be using our own internet and our own signal.

I'm confused by this whole thing. What exactly is the difference between using this versus just enabling wi-fi on the phone? It was my understanding that even prior to this update when connected over wi-fi it would use the router as the tower, my G1 did this as well.

It uses the WiFi for data not to make phone calls. With Wifi calling it will do just that. More reliable and give those who may have a spotty service at various locations a better signal. From what I have read this will still use your minutes. Thank God I have unlimited anyway. The feature I want is tethering. Always comes in handy when in a pinch.

Yeah I have very nice coverage where I live, it may be edge but I get some 3g... so pointless, more bloatware on the new "developer" phone. All we needed was wifi tether...

So help me here with the WiFi tether? What exactly is it because I'm used to BB tether where I can use my BB as a modem...is this similar or can it turn the phone into a hotspot...please explain.

There are two types, wired and wireless. Wired is like the bb tether where you need the USB cable to tether. Pdanet currently does this for you on the g2. Everybody wants wireless where you turn your phone into a hotspot.

Trust me, for the majority of T-Mobile customers, this is not bloatware. WiFi calling helps many customers who have weak signal indoors @ home or @ work.

easy tether is $5 cheaper than pdanet i believe, and it works great, saves you quite a bit of money if you travel a lot and end up at hotels that charge for wifi.
With my G1 easy tether was alright, but with the G2 it is great

Wifi Calling

It is the number one thing that I know a lot of people want and that TMO needs.

My dad lives in a remote are and only at&t reaches there. Otherwise he would be on tmo. So as soon as he heard that tmo was going to have wifi calling he is all over it. He can use the phone like normal until he gets about 2 miles from home he gets no signal and just get on wifi when he gets home. I was under the impression that it wouldn't use any minutes but maybe i am wrong. Either way I think it is great.

My T-Mo coverage is great where I live too but when I go on vacation coverage isn't that greatest every where I go. Sometimes the WiFi connection is better so it's nice to have the option to toggle it on when needed.
