why do you choose android?

I use for the freedom. Freedom of software, hardware, for the leading edge technology, apps, DRM, and the quality of apps.
I hear a some folks say iOS apps are better but for me, with the apps I use Android has far more superior to iOS apps.

1) 4.7" 1080P LCD 3 screen. (Whatever LCD 3 means. Maybe it means drop dead gorgeous ?)

2) 32 gigs of storage means I don't need a stinking SD card.

3) Apps I regularly used on my BBOS 7 device weren't available on their new platform.

4) Easy to unlock the boot loader and install a custom ROM. Bloatware is not just disabled and hidden, but totally gone. Don't like the manufacture's UI ? Not a problem, just do away with it. There's a ROM for that. Want quicker updates ? Again NP. Been running 4.3 on my HTC One, didn't have to wait for HTC nor AT&T.

5) Custom ROM disables ads. If you're a developer that tries to make money by having "free" apps that push ads for your revenue, sorry, try a paid app, I always buy them when they are available. I don't work for free, and if you have a good app, neither should you. Just don't try to push ads on me.

Well I can't say really why I switched to android since all ice had from apple is an iPad and iPod touch years ago when android wasn't that great. But I'll tell you why I'm sticking with it. Firstly, smoothness IS possible on devices like nexus, Google play editions, etc. Secondly, Timely updates ARE possible on those specifically aforementioned devices. Ever since I've had my nexus 4, I find paying $800 for an unlocked iPhone pointless when I can save 500 of those dollars by buying a better, bigger screened nexus. As for the camera, I have DSLR cameras so the iPhone camera is meaningless to me. Windows phones don't have enough app availability. Other OS' are pretty much... Other OS'... But yeah, nexus makes me stay on android with a $30 unlimited prepaid data plan from T-Mobile. Wouldn't switch OS anytime soon.

This is an easy one. App interoperability. Ability to install 3rd party apps that can be set as defaults. Better notifications. Easy and better integration with Google services like gmail, drive, maps. Google now. Widgets. Larger screens. More useful user facing features. Customization. File explorer.

I stay with android because I like widgets and I have an unhealthy need to change the look of my icons regularly, on the iPhone I had to jailbreak in order to do that.

Via my Nexus 4.

The app drawer homescreen split is really a smart idea in Android. The whole everything on the homescreen iOS idea seems somehow dated.

What is it about android that speaks to you as opposed to, say, iOS or windows phone? Is it rooting? Customization? Keyboards? Widgets?

I know for me personally I like the keyboard options and audio playback widgets. And I like the way apps can interact with each other.

But since I don't root, ROM, or flash, I wonder if I'm getting the most out of my experience with android and might be better served somewhere else.

Easy:
1. Freedom & ease of customization of software & OS
2. Rooting and flashing custom roms
3. Seamless integration with google accts and data
4. Greater diversity and choice of hardware
5. Freedom from dependence on crappy PC sync software like iTunes do any kind of simple file transfer from PC to device or vice versa
6. Variety of interface with widgets

The main reasons for me are:
Open source, root access, customization and flashing ROMS. I love having full control over everything on my phone. Android is the best at giving me that.

I had an iPhone for awhile from the iPhone 3G to iPhone 3GS. I ended up having to switch to Android because Verizon, at the time, didn't carry iPhone so I ended up getting a Droid during my time with Verizon. Since then I have always preferred Android. I like how the OS works compared to iOS from simple stuff to customizing anything. I've tried the newer iphones but I just don't like how they are doing some os stuff and the phones to small for my taste now.

I had a BlackBerry Storm way back. I moved over when the Droid X came out. It was because of the Hardware and choices of apps that I chose Android. I saw that RIM was stagnating. Now that I'm here it's ok, but I'd be happy going back to BB or move to Windows phone if they could provide what I'm used to now. I want widgets, a phone specific car dock with a good car dock app, more hardware choices for BB, and more widespread app support.

I love my Droid Maxx, but I am not loyal to my OS. I looked at the Z10 and the Lumia 928 before choosing the Droid Maxx. I decided to wait and see how both platforms progress over the next 1 to 2 years. I suppose I'm waiting to see if one pulls ahead of the other. I also love having a 5" screen.

I come from a Unix/Linux background and Android is Linux based, I feel at home with it and the customization is great. I have purchased lots of apps on the market, no need to illegally download paid apps when they often cost $1-4. Throughout the past decade I was using Blackberry but in 2009 I picked up on Android and loved it ever since.

For me, it's simple. My main email is on Google, and I'm not a fan of apple, so the choice is simple. Furthermore, android is a growing and strong software, with a wide selection of devices.

To me iOS is still the better system, for the following reasons: I know when an update is available everyone will get it and there is no hoping it comes around. The screen is great in the sun light and at night. The camera is one of the best around. The sms is fantastic, and iTunes is great. But I left them because I needed a bigger screen, im waiting for my LG G2 to arrive and I will hopefully have a good experience. Samsung left a foul taste in my mouth.

What speaks to me? Number of devices to choose from, advanced hardware and software, freedom to customize, and widgets.

Well, no. Not everyone gets every update. Apple leaves users of older hardware behind too. The first gen iPad hasn't been updated in almost two years. And when they stop...they stop. Not even security updates. It's ridiclious. So you end up with unpatched security holes running around loose in the wild. Not that there aren't similar issues on Android, but Apple is no saint here either.

well of course old devices don't....im talking like right now with android....for example when i had the GS2 whatever the update for the newest os came out and it took 2 months before i was able to get it....thats crazy...apple for example, ios7 came out and anyone with the 4s thru the 5s got it, thats my gripe with android. if new software comes out it needs to be pushed to everyone that has a phone that is 2 year or less in age.

You should note that Apple has 4s thru 5s to update, right? That is 3 phones. All variants of them have the same software and hardware. i.e. no difference between 4s models or 5 models. That is a pretty easy group to update. These would be compared to "google edition" android devices, which get the update quickly, faster than any other device like you request. There are a small group of "google edition" devices that get the quick update advantage.
Now. Consider that many different manufacturers use Android software, then add/change things to suit their phone. These are not raw software from google, therefore a quick update is not possible due to the extra testing and formatting needed. This encompasses hundreds of different phones from different manufacturers. This is why they take time to update.

So. Do android devices such as "google editions" (3+ phones on the market now) get instant updates? YES
Do ios devices such as the 4s-5s (3 phones on the market) get instant updates? YES

Conclusion: Just as many (or more) android devices get quick updates once they are released from google compared to ios. Because of the vast selection and variety of software on different manufacturer devices using android, it takes more time for those devices to get the update.

So many software and hardware choices. Even without rooting or flashing I have a lot of control of my device. I can keep it extremely simple and clean or complex and flashy.
