This is a really nooby question, but why do you have to use clockworkmod to flash custom ROMS? If you can flash backups from the stock android kernel, why not ROMS? :)

Recovery and kernels are two different things. You need a custom recovery to flash custom rom.

I'm not understanding what you mean by flash with kernel

You have to flash ROMs through a custom Recovery, which does not have to be Clockworkmod, because the recovery is designed to write the appropriate files packaged in the ROM to where things need to go. The custom recovery also has different options, such as backup and restore, that are not found in the stock recovery.

When you are referring to "kernal", I'm guessing you really mean the stock recovery.

As SRK said, you "should" flash your Roms through your Recovery, and not through Rom Manager. The thread on the site, was more than likely written some time ago, and probably only successful on a smidgen of phones at the time.

The benefits of Rom Manager, are that it allows an easy method of, Backups, Management of backups, Flashing perhaps a new version of Clockwork recovery, Checking for newer versions of Roms for your device and downloading them. But nowdays, it's highly advisable to flash through your recovery menu.

Nuff said.
