Why do you "root" phone?

I see people saying they have rooted their phones. Why & how do you do this?

For me it's the ability to install custom ROMs, backup apps, and data. I don't get into the major modding of Android as some do. However, that's another reason why people do it - further modding of their devices. It's not for everyone, so be sure to read up on it if you are thinking of doing it.
